The civic body demolished encroachments coming in the way of the flyover across the railway tracks on Monday, October 25. These encroachments are near Mahalakshmi station Keshavrao Khadye.

There are a total of 48 structures, out of which 16 were demolished. This removal of 16 encroachments will pave the way for constructing the first phase of the flyover. A cable-stayed bridge will be constructed from Sant Gadge Maharaj Chowk (Satrasta) on Keshavrao Khadye Marg towards Haji Ali by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), said officials.

The officials further mentioned that this cable-stayed bridge would be helpful in reducing the traffic which the commuters face on the present Mahalaxmi bridge. Apart from this, the traffic coming from the coastal cable-stayed bridge, which is under construction and going to South Central Mumbai, will be smoother.

The eligible owners who have been evicted are also legally rehabilitated. An official said that to demolish the encroachments further, the procedure of rehabilitating the families is in the final stages. They will remove the remaining encroachments in the next few weeks.

Last week, BMC had also floated bids for repairing and reconstructing 14 bridges in western suburbs. They are said to be located in Malad, Goregaon and Andheri.
