The second phase of the Mumbai Coastal Road (MCR) between Worli and Marine Drive will be opened by June 10, Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Tuesday, May 28.

Shinde made this announcement while inspecting the leakage in the south bound tunnel at Marine Drive in the first phase of the Coastal Road, which was inaugurated in March.

There were leakages in two to three expansion joints of the coastal road, and they will be plugged using polymer grouting. The Chief Minister also recommended applying polymer grouting to all the 25 joints on each side of the tunnel to prevent water logging even during monsoons. However, the vehicular movement on the coastal road won't be affected during the repair work, assured Shinde.

"Coastal Road phase 2 will open tentatively on June 10 from Marine Drive to Haji Ali, but we are trying to open it from Worli side as well. The entire coastal road from Bandra-Worli Sea-Link to Marine Drive will be opened by October," said Dr Amit Saini, BMC Additional Municipal Commissioner.

Shiv Sena (UBT) leader Aaditya Thackeray said that if the Maharashtra Vikas Aghadi (MVA) had remained in power, the coastal road would have been completed and opened to the public by December 2023.

He further exclaimed that the Mahayuti inaugurated the first phase in haste to gain credit before the elections and also assured that the MVA would probe the delay once the government is formed. "However, after a corrupt regime toppled our government, they slowed down and focused on increasing spending," Thackeray wrote in a post on X.
