According to the latest reports, Mumbai's Eastern Freeway has been named after the late state chief minister and Congress leader, Vilasrao Deshmukh. On Thursday, May 26, a notification in the same regard was issued by the state urban development.
Based on accounts, a decision in the same regard was undertaken in the state cabinet meeting in 2020 on how the road would be named after Deshmukh. This is reportedly being undertaken to appreciate his contribution to the project. The said project was inaugurated by the then chief minister, Prithviraj Chavan.
For those unversed, the Eastern Freeway which is 16.8km connects south Mumbai's P D'Mello Road to Chembur's Eastern Express Highway.
It has been reported that now considering the issuance of the notification, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will commence putting up signages with the official name.
Narratives highlight that while the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) built the road, it has now handed over the project to the BMC.
On the other hand, nearly three months ago, the BMC had proposed to undertake the repair works of a section of the Eastern Freeway that is between Bhakti Park and the entrance of tunnels. For this, the civic authority was slated to spend INR 27.05 crore.
