Last week, there was a discussion on social media that the 'Eros' cinema at Churchgate, which was recognised as the pioneer of the first single-screen cinemas in the history of Mumbai to retain its independent identity, will be demolished. However, the officials of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation have clarified that the repair and renovation work will be done without disturbing the original interior design of this cinema hall.

After the introduction of multi-screen theatres, audiences turned away from many old theatres in Mumbai, resulting in the closure of many single-screen theatres. 'Eros' theatre was shut down in 2017 for lack of money as the audience were not visiting the theatre.

Eros Cinema is situated opposite to Churchgate Station where Maharshi Karve Road and Jamshedji Tata Roads meet. Built in 1938, the interior design of this theatre is artistic. It is said that this cinema hall, which has an old-fashioned seating structure, has deteriorated in the last eighty-five years. Currently, the renovation work of this theatre is being done by Metro Realty Company. The area near the main entrance of the cinema hall has been covered for the past several months for renovation work and it is said that the interior repair work is being done there.

Municipal officials have informed that this theatre will not be demolished. It is understood that changes are proposed in the lobby area of this theatre to include a department store and a small theatre upstairs.
