Mumbai’s Aqua Line, the city’s first completely underground metro corridor, is expected to begin operations in August. The line stretches 33.5 kilometres from Aarey to Cuffe Parade and includes 27 stations. It connects major locations such as Mumbai Central, Churchgate, BKC, and CSMT.

Recently, a high-level meeting was held to discuss these plans. Representatives from Indian Railways, Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL), Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA), and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) participated. The discussion focused on building a seamless pedestrian network around the stations.

The proposed plan includes underground walkways connecting stations to nearby areas. These subways are expected to range between 500 meters and 1 kilometre in length. They will be equipped with escalators and elevators to make them accessible to all commuters.

One of the first planned links is a one-kilometre walkway from Acharya Atre Chowk station to the Mahalaxmi Racecourse and the Coastal Road parking zone near Haji Ali. An additional 160-meter stretch will connect the path to other open areas.

Route mapping for the pedestrian network has already started. A Detailed Project Report (DPR) is expected to be ready in the next four months.

If implemented across the city, these underground walkways could reduce road congestion, ease daily commutes, and make walking more convenient.

Currently, around 60,000 commuters travel daily between Aarey and Acharya Atre Chowk in Worli, even though the full route is not yet operational. With the line opening soon, officials are focusing on improving last-mile connectivity to the metro stations.
