According to the latest reports, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is looking to build a “sister city square” at the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC) that will act as a tourist destination.

For those unversed, Mumbai has 15 sister cities wherein for over a decade the consecutive mayors of Mumbai have headed the city’s relationship with these cities to develop cultural ties, commercial development, sharing knowledge and signing memorandums of understanding (MoU).

These sister cities include Los Angeles, St Petersburg (Russia), Stuttgart, Yokohama, Honolulu, New York City, Zagreb, Barcelona, Busan, Port of Odesa, Jakarta, Nadi, Antananarivo and Shanghai.

Based on an account by the Hindustan Times, the initiative is part of the civic body’s tactical urbanism that looks to curate interactive, pleasant areas for locals and tourists throughout the city. It has been reported that the draft design for the plans entails an art installation of the globe marking the 15 cities.

This will be coupled with landscaping, beautification and installation of the city’s flags. Additionally, visitors can visit the selfie point, information desks for each city and a help desk.

The civic authority hopes the square to be an exchange zone for a culture that will facilitate interaction between visitors, cited accounts. Additionally, the funds for the same will be accessed through the DPDC funds of Mumbai suburban guardian minister, Aaditya Thackeray.
