The infrastructure has received a significant boost with the commissioning of a new elevated deck under Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP) 3A at Nalasopara.
The Mumbai Railway Vikas Corporation Limited (MRVC) recently completed a 95-metre long and 11.5-metre wide elevated deck at Platform Number One. The new structure connects the two southernmost footbridges (FOBs). This will reduce congestion and improve passenger flow at the station, which handles 1.83 lakh passengers and around 440 suburban trains daily.
According to an official, the deck is part of the station improvement scheme at Nalasopara. The total estimated cost is around INR 75 crore. Future plans include a second elevated deck connecting all platforms, a new platform on the western side, four additional escalators and three lifts - all aimed at enhancing the comfort and convenience of passengers.
“This new elevated deck is a significant step towards reimagining the passenger experience on Mumbai’s suburban network,” said Sunil G Udasi, Chief Public Relations Officer, MRVC.
“We are not only decongesting one of the busiest stations on the Western Line but are also fulfilling MRVC’s commitment under MUTP 3A to provide safer, more accessible and passenger-centric infrastructure for rail users in the city.”
Part of a city-wide station redevelopment drive
The Nalasopara station redevelopment is one of the 17 station upgrades to be carried out under MUTP 3A – a INR 947 crore initiative aimed at transforming overcrowded stations on Mumbai’s suburban rail system.
Simultaneous renovation of Western, Central and Harbour lines
On the Western Line, seven stations are being upgraded – Khar Road (already completed), Santacruz, Kandivali, Mira Road, Bhayander, Vasai and Nalasopara. Ten stations on the Central and Harbour lines - Kasara, Neral, Dombivli, Mulund, Bhandup, Ghatkopar, Govandi, Mankhurd, Chembur and Guru Tegh Bahadur Nagar - are also part of the redevelopment plan.
Comprehensive improvements for passenger convenience
The comprehensive improvements under MUTP 3A include wider entry and exit points, improved lighting, modern ticketing infrastructure, improved security systems, new FOBs, escalators and lifts. All the interventions are designed to create safer, more efficient and passenger-friendly railway stations in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.
