The Navi Mumbai International Airport officials, in its official statement, on Thursday, January 12, assured that the project is being executed as per its scheduled implementation plan.

It further stated that the airport will be operational by the target date set of December 2024, without any delay.

This development came after several reports mentioned that the operations of the airport will be deferred to 2025. As per media reports, officials said airport to be ready by December 2024, testing and trials to begin in 2025 before opening it to public.

The construction work of this airport involves pre-development work, including diversion of Ulwe River, shifting of 220 KV and 110 KV high voltage transmission lines passing through the airport area, cutting of Ulwe Hill, and land resurfacing to increase the height to 8 metres and take to well above the high-flood level.

The second airport in the city built at Navi Mumbai, officially called DB Patil International Airport, is being developed by the CIDCO.

The Navi Mumbai airport will be linked to the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) via an express metro line and the airport will be the starting point of the Mumbai-Hyderabad High-Speed Rail (HSR) corridor.

The airport is a greenfield international airport being built by City and Industrial Development Corporation (CIDCO). The construction of greenfield airport is planned in three phases.

The first phase of the airport will be able to handle 10 million passengers per annum and will serve 90 million flyers when it will be expanded to its final capacity in the third phase.

At an estimated cost of INR 16,700 crores, the airport's construction was started in August 2021 and the first phase is expected to be fully operational by July 2024.
