The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) has taken up the construction of a new missing lane between Khopoli and Kusgaon to reduce the travel time on the Mumbai-Pune expressway by 20 to 25 minutes. 65 percent of this work has been completed and the remaining work is going on at war level. MSRDC claimed that the work of the route will be completed by the end of December 2022 and this new route will enter traffic service from January 2024.

The Mumbai-Pune Expressway has made travel faster, but at the same time, the number of accidents on this route has increased. Against this backdrop, the MSRDC decided to construct a new missing lane between Khopoli - Kusgaon to prevent accidents and speed up travel. The work of this 19.80 km long new route (missing lane) was started in February 2019.
