The Maharashtra government issued a GR to disburse INR 60 crore for setting up 23 automated vehicle fitness testing centres at several locations across the state.

These centres will conduct inspection and certification (I&C). They are expected to start before May 2024.

The centres will check 23 parameters, including tyres and indicators with latest technology. They will check if vehicles are road worthy and do not pollute the environment.

They will be located at Thane, Kalyan, Panvel, Tardeo RTO in Mumbai. These centres will help ensure commercial vehicles like auto-rickshaws, Kaali Peeli taxis, aggregator cabs like Ola and Uber, school buses, tourist buses and trucks/tempos plying on city roads meet standard requirements for safe driving and emission parameters.

State transport commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar, while welcoming the decision, said the government-appointed high powered committee disbursed the first installment of INR 60 crore for the project to commence.

The project comprises two tenders, one for 10 vehicle fitness test centres and another for 13 across the state. The money will be disbursed from the Road Safety Fund of the state government.
