As per the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation (MMRC), there are only 9 phases left for the underground metro line from Colaba to Seepz.

So far, out of 54.5 km, 48 km undergrounding has been completed. The first phase of undergrounding of Metro 3 was completed on September 24, back in 2018. The 32nd phase was completed on Monday, October 5. A total of 17 tunnel boring machines (TBMs) were used on the Metro 3 line. For this, large launch shafts have been prepared at 7 places.

Moreover, Metro 3 undergrounding has been done under packages 2, 5 and 7. There are still 9 phases of undergrounding in packages one, three, four and six. Metro-3 is one of the most densely populated areas in Mumbai, with its old buildings, historical heritage as well as tall buildings, flyovers, metro lines and railways.

According to sources, 87 per cent of the work related to tunnelling was completed recently. This part of the work was related to the underground Metro corridor, and officials said to have had the breakthrough when the tunnel boring machine (TBMs) finished the work. The construction of other metro lines is being planned in the city at the moment and around seven TBMs have been put to work across other corridors in Mumbai and is expected to be completed in early 2021.
