The Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA) has been working towards providing affordable houses to people and alongside, is also responsible for the redevelopment of dilapidated buildings. Recently, the residents of Motilal Nagar 1, 2, and 3 in Goregaon (West) have opposed the redevelopment project by MHADA at their residences. However, the housing association has asked them to show trust in the procedure and has assured them that the project will be completed properly under MHADA.
Earlier, the housing body had held a meeting to understand the reason behind the residents' protest where they (residents) suggested that MHADA must reinstate faith amongst the public that they can conduct the project properly. Meanwhile, the residents amongst their various demands have demanded facilities such as Corpus Funds, houses with more area, etc.

The President of Motilal Nagar Vikas Samiti, Yuvraj Mohite said that prior to knowing the exact number of people that need to be rehabilitated, MHADA had conducted a survey which has instigated an atmosphere of suspicion amongst the citizens. After which, the protest against the project began and the survey had to be halted. Therefore, he demanded that the residents must be informed about the survey before it is conducted.
After which, MHADA chairman Madhu Chavan stated that they will give their best attempts to ensure that the work is conducted properly and also asked the residents to respond positively.

Earlier, Bombay High Court had passed a verdict asking only MHADA to take up the Motilal Nagar redevelopment work. Accordingly, MHADA initiated the work and decided to set up a small city at the 142-acre land. The housing association is planning to build around 40,000 houses at Motilal Nagar. The project will be completed at an estimated cost of ₹30,000 crore.
