According to a district-wise map of health emergences drawn across the state health department, it has come to light that there are 4,067 villages in Maharashtra, including the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) that could get flooded during monsoon this year.

As per state health department report, Pune has the highest number of vulnerable villages at 702, followed by Kolhapur with 645. There are 206 vulnerable villages in Thane, 273 in Palghar, 90 in Raigad and one village in Kalyan. Though, no “danger zones” have been identified in Mumbai.

With the arrival of monsoon, the danger of disease outbreaks, floods, areas getting cut off from the rest of the state, paucity of drinking water, among others are faced every year.

However, the health department has prepared 423 rapid response teams for immediate assistance to these villages. The exercise began in March itself, said state health department’s surveillance officer.
