Mumbai: 1 died, 2 injured after roof collapses in JJ Hospital premises; Police Books Contractor

The deceased has been identified as Moftiful Sheikh, a resident of Bandra West. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and a son. The other two workers—Mohammed Mister and Farazool Haq—have been admitted to the CCU ward and are under observation.

As a portion of the roof of JJ Hospital collapsed, it has come to light that a 50-year-old labourer died and two other were seriously injured, said reports on Thursday, April 7.

The incident took place at around 2:30 pm on Wednesday, April 6, when five labourers were conducting repairs at one portion of the building and a part of the roof came crashing on them, said police officials. Though, the three were rushed to the hospital, one of them succumbed to the injuries.

The deceased has been identified as Moftiful Sheikh, a resident of Bandra West. He is survived by his wife, three daughters, and a son. The other two workers—Mohammed Mister and Farazool Haq—have been admitted to the CCU ward and are under observation.

Doctors at the J J hospital said the body had been sent for post mortem. The other two labourers, who are being treated, are stable for now and are under observation. They will be discharged in the next two days.

The J J Marg Police have registered a case against the contractor for deliberately ignoring safety measures and endangering the lives of the workers and others during building repair. They are probing the matter further. However, the contractor has been booked under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) - sections 288 (negligent conduct with respect to pulling down or repairing buildings), 304 (causing death by negligence), 336 (Act endangering life or personal safety of others), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).
