“Not a single assembly session went where the issue of redevelopment of BDD chawls was not discussed. However, only discussions were held but no step was taken for the project. So, I decided to work on the redevelopment of BDD chawls issue which was pending since 20 years. Actually, the redevelopment should have been done by last ruling government but they were not interested in doing so,” said CM Devendra Fadnavis. The stone laying foundation ceremony took place at Worli’s Jambori ground on Saturday.

The pooja was performed by a senior citizen couple at Naigaon and the work began at Naigaon and N M Joshi road. MHADA’s vice president Sambhaji Zhende said that slowly and steadily people will be moved to MHADA’s transit camps. There are almost 1200 transit camps where residents will be put up by paying the rent. Zhende added that once the building gets ready, MHADA will give away 2 BHK flats to the residents.

Jambori maidan which has a history of its own will not be touched during the redevelopment of BDD chawls. Police had also beefed up the security around the bhoomipujan ceremony and so no untoward incident took place during the ceremony. Along with this, CM also announced that under Pradhanmantri Awas Yojna, Maharashtra State Police Housing & Welfare Corp.LTD. will be building homes in two years. CM added that subsidy will be given for the same.
