The Maharashtra Public Works Department (PWD) is seeking pre-qualification bids for the redevelopment of the proposed MLA Hostel at Nariman Point. This project is expected to be undertaken at a cost of ₹900 crores.
However, this redevelopment plan has drawn the ire of the opposition especially since the Maharashtra Government has admitted to being in a financial crisis with most of its resources positioned towards fighting the coronavirus pandemic.

As per PWD sources quoted by TOI, the cost estimate of ₹900 crores could go up in the future. Officials said that although the government had signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the National Building Construction Corporation for the construction of the towers, the delay meant that the state had to issue a fresh tender.
BJP MLA Atul Bhatkalkar expressed his discontent with the state’s move on Twitter. “Rs 900 crore tender has been issued by the Thackeray government for the MLA hostel. This seems to have slipped the eyes of those advising the Prime Minister to focus on vaccination rather than the construction of the Parliament Complex. Tell the chief minister to focus on the corona pandemic. He will get his percentage there as well,” he said.

The proposed MLA hostel will consist of a single 42-storey tower and another 28-storey complex for a total of 675 flats. Officials said that each flat will have at least 1,000 square feet of space with 600 sq ft reserved for the MLAs and 400 sq ft for party workers that visit Mumbai on the MLA’s behalf. These towers are expected to be completed within the next three years.
The towers will also have a gymnasium on the terrace, waiting halls for visitors, conference halls, salon, dispensary, canteen, grocery store, as well as a theatre.
