Led by Ashok Chavan the senior Congress leader, the public works department has prepared a Rs 70,000cr plan to build a 400km road linking Mumbai and Sindhudurg through Raigad and Ratnagiri. According to reports, upon completion, the road will help reduce travel time from Mumbai to Sindhudurg to three hours which at present takes six to seven hours.

On September 6, an order was released on the public department’s website that elaborated on how the government had earlier asked the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC) to curate a comprehensive project report last year. On August 25, the proposal was accepted by the high-level infrastructure committee led by Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray.

Based on the account by the Times of India, a senior bureaucrat mentioned the said project will be named, the Greenfield Konkan Expressway, which is estimated to cost Rs 70,000cr. In two years, a detailed project report can be expected to be completed. With another four years to finish the project, 4000 hectares of land will be needed.

The bureaucrat then elucidated that the said expressway is premediated like the Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samrudhi Marg that will link Nagpur and Mumbai. In both houses of the state legislature, the project was considered and it was suggested that the MSRDC be assigned the project considering its dexterity. It is hoped that this project will aid in the development of the Konkan region, highlighted the narrative.

Whilst Mumbai is the financial capital of India, Konkan in spite of its propinquity to the island city hasn’t registered significant development due to inadequate transport and communication network, stated the report. The bureaucrat added that many from Konkan come to Mumbai for employment opportunities and thus, the construction of the expressway will aid the region’s development, highlighted the report.
