Ashok Chavan shares a report on damages caused to roads and bridges due to heavy rainfall

A total of 4138 roads, causeways, bridges and culverts have been damaged in the state. As of now, over INR 2,000 crore will be needed for temporary repairs and it is predicted that INR 1,935 crore will have to be used for permanent repairs.

Maharashtra's Public Works Minister Ashok Chavan, on Tuesday, August 3, 2021, took stock of the damage caused to roads and bridges due to heavy rains and floods in the last few days in the state. As per the estimate calculated so far, a fund of approximately INR 2,224 crore will be required to  repair the damaged roads and bridges in the state, said Minister Chavan.

The review meeting to discuss the matters was held  at Sahyadri Guest House and present at the same were Secretary (Roads) Ulhas Debadwar, Secretary (Construction) Anil Kumar Gaikwad, Chief Engineer Mumbai Patil, Chief Engineer of Konkan Division Prakash Ingle, Deputy Secretary Basvaraj Pandhare along with Chief Engineers and Superintending Engineers of all the departments among others.

According to the reports, a total of 4138 roads, causeways, bridges and culverts have been damaged in the state. Entire roads and bridges have been washed away across several places and some also reported less damage. As of now, over INR 2,000 crore will be needed for temporary repairs and it is predicted that INR 1,935 crore will have to be used for permanent repairs.

Minister Chavan said that due to climate change, heavy rainfall is likely to affect the state in the future as well and hence it is important to consider several factors while constructing roads and bridges. Furthermore, a policy will have to be formulated with emphasis on long-term measures and consideration needs to be given to understand if elevated roads can be built to avoid flooding.

Roads and bridges damaged by heavy rains and floods in the last few days have been inspected by the authorities directly and drones have also been used in some places. Severe damages has been reported at several roads and the inspection has been done thoroughly. Many roads were closed due to the damages and flooding and were then reopened on  war footing.

Officials have informed that priority has to be given while repairing roads and bridges and timely planning should be done to ensure quality work in a short period of time. Minister Chavan also directed that various options should be considered for the availability of funds which can be used for repair work. 

He also said that visits to Konkan and other areas will have to be planned to inspect the damages caused to the roads and bridges.
