The floods and landslides caused due to heavy rains have resulted in huge loss of life and property across 8-10 districts in Maharashtra. In light of this, the state government has announced a relief fund of Rs 11,500 cr to assist those affected by the floods.

Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray took a cabinet meeting on Tuesday afternoon, wherein the funds were approved for utilization for emergency relief, repairs and other long-term measures. The package was announced by Relief and Rehabilitation Minister Vijay Wadettiwar after the cabinet meeting.

Raigad, Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Sangli, Satara and some regions in western Maharashtra were badly hit by the rains. There was a growing demand from the public for immediate relief from the damage caused by the floods and landslides. They also sought emergency repairs and rehabilitation. Against this backdrop, the Relief and Rehabilitation Department made a presentation on the damage, at the meeting.

Since farmers, traders, shopkeepers, artisans and even the common man has been affected by the intense rains, which caused a dire situation, the authorities decided to help at a large scale than usual. Similarly, the Chief Minister directed in the cabinet meeting, that a committee of experts be appointed to report on the problems of floods within three months.

The relatives of the deceased will be given Rs 4 lakh as per the SDRF norms, Rs 1 lakh from the CM Relief Fund, Rs 2 lakh from the Gopinath Munde Farmers Accident Insurance Scheme and Rs 2 lakh as announced by the Prime Minister. Thus, relatives of the deceased will receive Rs 9 lakh assistance.

Beyond the norms of the NDRF, Rs 10,000 will be given per family as part of the Sanugrah grant. Reports also state that 16,000 shops and stalls were damaged, thus Rs 50,000 for shopkeepers and Rs 10,000 for stallholders has been granted. Additionally, Rs 1,50,000 in case of complete house collapse, Rs 50,000 for 50 per cent house damage, 25 per cent for 25 per cent damaged house and at least Rs 15,000 for partially damaged houses has been granted.
