Vile Parle – The residents of Sanjay Gandhi Nagar on Justice M. C. Chhangla Road in airport area have launched their dharna agitation in front of the domestic airport to press for their demand for rehabilitation. The agitation, planned to be held for six days, will be made severe if the MMRDA fails to take note of their demand, informed Adv. Subhash Gaikwad, president of Rahiwasi Ekta Sangh, Uttam Sasane, Sundar Padmukh, Shivanand Posthe and hundred of local residents. The agitators resorted to sloganeering against State government’s use of force.

On July 22, 2014, Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajpathi Raju had sent a letter to the Maharashtra government asking it to rehabilitate the slums around Mumbai airport. The letter had clearly stated that slum-dwellers’ rehabilitation should be done at their place of resident. The State government has not implemented the rehabilitation scheme as per the suggestions of the Central government, alleged the residents.

They have threatened that over 90,000 slum-dwellers will hit the streets if State government fails to implement the Central government’s suggestions.
