Slum Rehabilitation Authority Will Begin Slum Survey Across Mumbai in September

The Maharashtra Government has authorized the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA) to undertake a survey of all slums within Mumbai and Thane

The state issued a gazette notification last week directing the SRA to appoint officers for each zone in the city to proceed with the survey. The officers will also be tasked with issuing eligibility certificates for free housing to slum residents.

A similar survey will be conducted at Dharavi where the Dharavi Redevelopment Project remains pending even after 17 years. Chief Executive Officer of the SRA, Satish Lokhande said that covering all slums under an SRA survey will hasten the process. He added that a data map covering large areas will be uploaded online to maintain transparency.

“We carried out GIS mapping of slum clusters in 2015. Now we have appointed four agencies that will go door-to-door, record every hut, every inhabitant of the hut, collect details of Aadhaar and voter ID cards. We shall link all these details for every hutment dweller — the location will be mapped through GIS, photographs of the dwellers, along with their various proofs, will all be put together and this will help us put data in one place, making it easy to issue annexure II,” Lokhande said.

The SRA has already asked electricity distribution companies to disclose the bills issued to slum residents. The aforementioned Annexure-II document is vital as it lists the names of slum inhabitants who are eligible for the free housing scheme.

“Once the data is ready, we shall invite objections/suggestions from the public to correct any anomalies,” Lokhande added. The survey will commence across Mumbai and its suburbs in September.
