Western Railway (WR) officials have commissioned an automatic coach washing plant at the Mumbai Central Coaching Depot belonging to the Mumbai Division. Chief Spokesperson for Western Railway, Sumit Thakur said, “The plant helps in minimizing time, water and manpower to complete the washing process of entire trains effectively.”

“Due to the automation and efficiency of the plant, it is expected that this will lead to savings of approx. Rs. 68 lakhs per year in external washing cost for the depot,” Thakur added. This project will be undertaken at a cost of Rs 1.67 crores.

This cleaning plant will be automatic and will sense the movement of the rakes within the unit. Officials said that a 24-coach rake will be fully washed in just 20 minutes while adding that it will be extremely efficient in the utilisation of water by using 60% less water as compared to manual washing of the coaches.

This, the officials believe will result in savings of around 18 million litres of freshwater annually. Interestingly, this is equivalent to the freshwater requirements of 365 urban people over an entire year, resulting in big savings overall.
