All India Bakchod, commonly known as ‘AIB’, India’s most popular comedy group (for all reasons possible) released a very important video a couple of days back on their YouTube channel. This video was titled ‘Desi YouTube Rewind 2017 #PeekeMatChala’ and is AIB’s second year-end video which summarises the entire year, foresees the upcoming year and also emphasises on not to ‘Drink and Drive’ in association with OLA.

AIB is usually considered to be all fun, no seriousness with the “New-age YouTube wale” tag, but this video shows us how much depth their content carries. Let’s start by breaking down the — 9-minute or so — video and see what exactly AIB was trying to do.

AIB: Desi YouTube Rewind 2017 #PeekeMatChala

The video starts with a drunk person (Varun) trying to get into his car but is struggling to open it because well, he’s drunk? The man is later kidnapped by his friends and is satirically threatened by them who are disguised as thugs and are trying to get his car keys to make sure he avoids driving after being heavily intoxicated. The friends use funny methods to bring his intoxication level down but Varun escapes only to reach a room full of people stopping him from going home in his car, discouraging him to drive after being drunk. Varun’s friends then sing a song to him, narrating the entire of 2017 in an optimistic light.

Important pointers from the Optimistic version of the song

1) Pahlaj Nihalani’s sacking
2) A funny Game of Thrones reference
3) Virat Kohli aka “Chikoo” and his centuries
4) Baba Ram Rahim’s conviction
5) Right to privacy
6) Satellites
7) WhatsApp’s delete feature
8) Twitter 280 character expansion
9) Manushi Chhillar’s Ms. World crown
10) P.V. Sindhu’s performance
11) Baahubali’s big revelation
12) India hosting FIFA U-17 World Cup
13) Mirabai Chanu’s medal
14) Triple Talaq verdict
15) Fidget spinners

After creatively fitting all these points in a rhythmic tune, Varun gets fed-up with all the optimistic talk and bursts the “positive” bubble as he creates his pessimistic tune, “Oh mere friend dear, kya f*****l tha yeh year,” in the Mere Rashke Qamar tune, discussing all the negative events from 2017.

Was 2017 really bad?

1) Just when the country was recovering from Demonetisation, India was hit with GST in July.
2) Gorakhpur death case
3) Spending thousands of crores on statues
4) Railway deaths and the Bullet Train controversy
5) Justin Beiber’s gig (this one really cracked me up)
6) Delhi’s smog
7) Social media outrage on political issues
8) Chester Bennington’s death (This was an emotional moment for all Linkin Park fans)
9) Outrage against movies like ‘Padmavati’
10) Not focusing on the real problems in India
11) Gauri Lankesh murder

After the optimistic and pessimistic songs are done, the third version speaks about how neither of the two should affect the upcoming year and 2018 shouldn't be pulled down because of the chaos 2017 experienced.

With light, positive pointers, the songs narrates tiny, happy things in our day-to-day life which make us smile.

Find joy in little things

1) Not forgetting your charger in the drawer
2) Finding a damn nail-cutter when you need it!
3) Cutting chai without malai (Really need this)
4) Killing a mosquito in one shot
5) There’ll be more chakhna than daaru
6) Finding a chilled bottle of water when you get home from work
7) Avengers: Infinity War
8) Political system progressing
9) Shah Rukh Khan playing FIFA (This never gets old!)

A very well curated video with strong, quirky content had many YouTubers and comedians playing a part in it. This video tries to keep things light at the same time discuss important issues which took place in our country in 2017 and as citizens, we need to throw some light on the negatives and make sure the future in positive. Comedy isn’t always about throwing punches and creating puns but also the real message behind the content is important. This video was written and directed by Girish Narayandass and well, he's done a fantastic job at it!

Peeke Mat Chala Pyaare, Tu Jaan Dega Re!

This video is all about how a calendar year is going to be filled with ups and downs, positives and negatives, but life goes on and you have to look to the future with a bright smile on your face. Of course, there will be no smile if you drink and drive so please, not this New Year’s Eve, not any day, never drink and drive.

Wish you a very happy new year, Mumbai!
