Renowned Indian Singer, S P Balasubrahmanyam, passed away on Friday, September 25, 2020, due to coronavirus (COVID19) infection. Popularly known as SPB, he got himself admitted at Chennai’s MGM Healthcare Hospital, after testing positive for coronavirus last month. However, his health deteriorated on September 24, 2020, and the hospital released a statement regarding the same.

As per the statement, his condition was critical and he was on maximal life support, in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) under the observation of a team of specialists. He tested negative for coronavirus on September 7, 2020.

Upon knowing the same, several celebrities offered their prayers and condolences on social media.

SPB was born in 1946 and passed away at the age of 74. He one of the popular singers in India, and has sung over 40,000 songs in 16 Indian languages. Besides this, he has also acted in several films in South India.

In a career spanning for 50 years, SPB aka Balu had earned many accolades and records. One of his achievements on his website states, “Balu has recorded 17 songs in Kannada for the composer Upendra Kumar in Bangalore from 9.00 a.m. to 9.00 p.m. on February 8, 1981.”

He was conferred Padma Shri 2001 by then President of India Hon’ble K.R. Narayanan and Padma Bhushan in 2011 by then President of India Hon’ble Prathiba Patel. He also had four doctorates from Potti Sreeramulu Telugu University (1999), Satyabama University (2009), Andhra University (2009), and JNTU - Anantpur (2011). Besides these was felicitated with several national awards and state government awards.

Some of his fans, in 2016, decided to support the needy and serve the society following the principles of SPB. Upon knowing this many followed and joined the organization whereby the donations were wisely used for the causes. Fans eventually set up an institution named, SPB Fans Charitable Foundation, the same year in September.
