Thane Police has arrested a person in connection with the murder of Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) leader Jameel Shaikh, said an official on November 26.

According to reports, the accused, identified as Shahid Sheikh, was presented before the court on November 26. The court has sent the accused in police custody till December 3.

The investigation progressed with the help of CCTV footage and they were able to nab the killer. After interrogating the arrested had revealed to the police that Sheikh's murder was pre-planned and even the number plate of the bike used by them was fake.

The Thane police have deployed four squads, including the Crime Branch, to search for the other person involved in the killing. Officials said they would investigate other reasons behind the murder. As the family members had alleged that he was targeted because of his opposition against a cluster development project.

The MNS leader was laid to rest on November 25 with a large number of people attending the funeral procession.

Jameel Shaikh (49), president of a civic ward in Thane city, was shot dead by two unidentified persons in the Rabodi area in Thane on November 21. The brutal killing was captured on CCTV cameras. The police are searching for the other accused in the case.
