The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) initiated a campaign to remove political banners and flags on Saturday, December 7.
Ahead of the oath- taking ceremony of the Chief Minister and two deputy CMs on December 5, several illegal posters and banners had come up across the city.
During this drive, the BMC successfully removed 1,963 banners and flags throughout the city.
Of the total, at 766, the highest number of banners and flags were removed from A ward, which is home to Azad Maidan, the venue for the oath-taking ceremony. Of these, 605 were flags alone. Meanwhile, 56 political banners and boards as well as 105 social event-related boards were taken down. The ward A also includes areas such as Churchgate, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT).
Among other civic wards, 140 were removed from S ward which includes parts of Bhandup and Powai, 106 from G North which includes parts of Dadar, Mahim.
During the state assembly elections, the city was inundated with hoardings from political parties and candidates. Even after the elections, these hoardings continue to clutter the city's landscape.
Therefore, the Bombay High Court (HC) recently reprimanded the Maharashtra government and civic bodies across the state for not adhering to its directives on curbing illegal hoardings and banners. Additionally, the illegal banners also drew flak from citizens.
In response to criticism for inaction, the civic chief Bhushan Gagrani and the Additional Municipal Commissioner (city) Ashwini Joshi directed officials to conduct a clean-up drive by removing such posters and banners across the city.
The BMC removed 204 boards, 367 banners, 12 posters, and 912 flags. Besides, the ward staffers also extracted 443 religious and social banners.
Earlier, on Friday, December 6, the BMC also scooped up nearly 5,000 kg of garbage from Azad Maidan and its periphery.
