Contesting elections from the Wadala constituency, Bharatiya Janata Party's (BJP) candidate Kalidas Kolambkar has registered a unique record to his name. The former Shiv Sena and Congress leader, has become the first and only Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) to emerge victorious in the Assembly Elections.

Just in case you didn't know, Kolambkar is the oldest MLA to be elected for Legislative Assembly. Through his eighth win, Kolambkar managed to defeat Congress candidate Shivkumar Lad with a lead of more than 26,000 votes.

The veteran leader had begun his political career under Shiv Sena and was chosen MLA eight times despite switching to three different political parties over the years. However, his work and his ability to develop personal relations with the voters in his constituency earned him loyal votes.

Kolambkar: A Rubix Cube

Similar to a Rubix cube, Kolambkar switching sides always turned in a right move for the veteran leader. From 1990 to 2004, he had contested the elections as a Shiv Sena leader and was chosen as an MLA for four consecutive terms. He was a State Minister under Narayan Rane's leadership throughout his association with Shiv Sena but in 2004, as Rane quit the party, Kolambkar followed his footsteps.

With Rane switching to Congress, Kolambkar too chose to become a Congress leader and was able to win the Assembly elections three times during the span.

However, owing to the Modi wave in 2014, Kolambkar failed to win the 2014 Maharashtra Assembly Elections. After which, in 2019 Assembly Elections, he switched to the Modi-led party and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party. The move fruited as he won the elections with a lead of more than 26,000 votes against Congress leader Shivkumar Lad.

Now it is expected that the veteran leader will be offered a State Ministry owing to his seniority and political experience.
