BJP workers led by state’s party chief Chandrakant Patil blew conch sells outside temples in the state and conducted a “shankhanad andolan” to demand the opening of shrines for people. Protests were held at temples in Mumbai, Pune, Nashik, Solapur and Nagpur, stated accounts.

The workers and leaders from the party walked to the shrines whilst blowing conch shells. In Pune, the agitation was headed by Patil, where workers from the party, walked into Kasbapeth Ganesh Temple, challenging that it be opened. Patil according to the report by The Indian Express stated that the use of shankhanad signifies a wake-up call to the MVA government who is sleeping. He said that the request to open temples has fallen on deaf ears for the last 15 months.

Although restrictions have eased in many places, relaxations for shrine visits haven’t been brought by the government.

Outside Mumbai’s Babulnath Temple, Mumbai BJP chief Mangalprabhat Lodha led the protest. In Solapur’s, Pandharpur temple, many activists from the party held party flags and broke into the temple, while jumping barriers and police orders.

Extenuating this move by the party, Patil said that the government is giving precedence to liquor bars over temples and ignoring the huge crowd that gathers outside liquor shops. He elaborated that then, the authorities don’t make use of police force, but when the party requested that temples be open, the police force was used to arrest them.

According to reports, covid-19 protocols weren’t followed at agitation sites. Social distancing norms were gone for a toss during the protest in Solapur and Pune too.
