Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra legislative assembly, Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday slammed the ministers of ruling Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government for their varying stand on the issue of Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

While speaking to the reporters at Vidhan Sabha premises, Fadnavis said that there is a lot of confusion in Maharashtra over CAA because different party leaders and ministers of the MVA government are giving contradictory statements.

“The MVA government should clarify its view on the CAA. There should be discussion regarding the same,” Fadnavis said.

The BJP leader further stated that some ministers in the MVA government are openly against CAA and are also participating in anti-CAA rallies while expressing their intention to bring a resolution against the citizenship law in the Maharashtra assembly.

This is happening despite Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray extending support to the CAA while stating that it won’t harm anyone in the state, Fadnavis added.

“There’s a lot of confusion among the leaders and people of Maharashtra which needs clarification. The MVA government should clear their stand on the floor of the house about their views on the CAA,” Fadnavis said.

The BJP intends to bring an ordinance in favour of the CAA in an attempt to corner the three-party MVA government on the issue.

Former Maharashtra Finance Minister and senior BJP leader, Sudhir Mungantiwar expressed a similar view on the matter and said that the Chief Minister has maintained that people shouldn’t worry about the CAA.

“However, some of his ministers have the opposite view. Therefore, clarity on the issue is required,” Mungantiwar said.

LoP in Maharashtra legislative council, Pravin Darekar asserted that it was important that the people of Maharashtra know the position of MVA government regarding the CAA and the same should be cleared on the floor of the house.
