On Wednesday, March 9, the BJP conducted a protest at Azad Maidan to demand the resignation of Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik. The party commenced their protest from Azad Maidan and marched towards Metro Cinema in south Mumbai.

Upon reaching Metro Cinema, the Mumbai Police detained BJP leader Devendra Fadnavis, Chandrakant Patil, Nitesh Rane amongst others.

Later, accounts state that Fadnavis, Asish Shelar, Kirit Somaiya, Praveen Darekar, Mangal Prabhat Lodha and other party leaders who were taken to the Yellow Gate police station were then released.

At Azad Maidan, Fadnavis demanded the resignation of Malik and reportedly remarked that if the government doesn’t sack him then it will seem that they are standing with the underworld fugitive, Dawood Ibrahim.

The leader of Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly added that it isn’t fair that one minister who is in jail is still a minister. He requested the Assembly’s Speaker to remove him from the cabinet.

Apart from Fadnavis, BJP state president Chandrakant Patil also strongly demanded the resignation of Malik. Patil alleged that the MVA government has been pressurized by the underworld and thus, they aren’t taking Malik’s resignation.

This demand by the BJP, however, has been rejected by the MVA government. For those unversed, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) arrested Malik in connection with Dawood Ibrahim's money laundering case. However, the leaders of the MVA government are of the opinion that the entire case against Malik is 'fabricated'.
