After the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) revealed that it has attained 99.13 per cent of nullah-desilting across the city, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) alleged that it has found 100 open manholes in nine administrative wards of Mumbai. Moreover, it has the civic body to cover them within a week.

Releasing an official statement, AAP stated that BMC was creating death traps for Mumbaikars.

Moreover, the Party on Monday, May 30, slammed the BMC for the large number of open manholes across the city that have not been fixed on the onset of the monsoon.

Aam Aadmi Party teams across the city have found more than a 100 open manholes across nine wards of the city. The party demanded that the BMC fix all open manholes within the week and provide a real time update of the same. Every year the citizens face this risk with many having lost lives as well. The question arises, will the BMC only act once its negligence proves fatal?

“This year the Aam Aadmi Party has found 109 open manholes across the city spanning 9 Administrative wards. Many of these manholes do not even have any warning signs put up around them making them a huge risk for pedestrians and drivers alike. If the Aam Aadmi Party can track more than a 100 open manholes why is it that the municipality with its huge budget and resources is not able to do the same?” the party further mentioned.

Despite the BMC being the richest municipality in the world they have every year failed at tracking and fixing this problem. It may be remembered that in 2017 noted Mumbai Doctor Deepak Amarapurkar had lost his life by falling into an open manhole just a few meters from his home. Amarpurkar's body was found only 2 days after his death. Similarly, in the next two years a 2 year old and a seven year old also lost their lives in Chembur and Dharavi respectively. Last year as well a video went viral when two women in Bhandup fell into an open manhole. Luckily both women escaped unhurt.

"It is shameful that every year the BMC refuses to do its duty and fix open manholes. This has now become an annual tragedy where someone or the other ends up falling into manholes and many times losing their lives" said Aam Aadmi Party Mumbai Working President Dwijendra Tiwari.

"If the Aam Aadmi Party can find so many open manholes across the city, what is stopping the BMC from tracking and fixing them? Will they only take action once lives are lost?" said Ruben Mascarenhas, Aam Aadmi Party Working President.

"We demand that the BMC fix these 100+ open manholes within the week as well as track, fix and report real time the statuses of open manholes across the city instead of waiting for another tragedy" said AAP Mumbai leader Gopal Jhaveri.

The Aam Aadmi Party demands that all the BMC track & fix all open manholes and provides real time reports of the same for the safety of Mumbaikars.
