It is expected that elections to all local bodies in the state, including the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), will be held after Diwali. There were indications that the elections would be held in October as per the Supreme Court order. Accordingly, the state government had also announced the schedule for ward formation. However, the Urban Development Department on Monday amended it and extended the time limit for ward formation.
According to the new order issued by the Urban Development Department, the Commissioner of the BMC, the District Collectors, and the Chief Officers of the Municipal Councils have been directed to submit the reports on ward structuring. As per the order, the BMC must submit its report by October 6, the 'D' class municipal corporations by October 13, and the municipal councils by September 30.

The Supreme Court issued an order in May 2025 regarding the local body elections, which have been pending for the last two and a half years.
Previously, the deadline for submitting ward structures to all municipalities and municipal councils was the end of September. However, since the revised deadline for submitting the ward structure is October, the State Election Commission will announce the elections only after it is submitted. Due to the revised deadline, there are indications that the local body elections will now be held only after Diwali.
