Ahead of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections, Congress has decided to go alone. With BMC polls 2022 being just a few months away, the party has started strategizing and preparing for the same.

Accordingly, Congress has recommended three popular names for the post of Mumbai Mayor. On Monday, August 23, the Strategy Committee of the Mumbai Congress unit prepared a report for the BMC Elections and sent it to the top leaders for a discussion.

The committee recommended the names of Bollywood actors Sonu Sood, Riteish Deshmukh, and fitness enthusiast Milind Soman as potential candidates for the Mumbai Mayor's post.

Currently, Kishori Pednekar, a leader of the ruling Shiv Sena, is the Mayor of the island city.

Interestingly, none of the names mentioned is members of Congress.

The 25-page strategy document was drafted by Mumbai Congress Secretary Ganesh Yadav and is yet to be officially tabled before the party leaders. Yadav said that the city Congress chief Bhai Jagtap will discuss the document with senior party leaders. Later, the document will be presented to the AICC Secretary in charge of Maharashtra H K Patil. It is expected to be presented in the next few days.

Moreover, in its report, the Committee opined to consider those without any political baggage for the post of Mayor. It also suggested that the face of BMC Mayor should attract the youth and bring the public to its side. In addition, if Congress decides to fight elections on its own, it needs to immediately announce candidates on 147 seats where there are no Congress corporators and areas where senior leaders’ interests are not affected.

The BMC election is scheduled to be held in February 2022. The municipal corporation is considered Asia’s richest civic body with an annual budget of nearly INR 37,000 crores.
