Bollywood Actress Urmila Matondkar on Wednesday joined Congress in the presence of newly appointed Mumbai Congress chief Milind Murli Deora and Sanjay Nirupam. Matondkar was inducted into the party ahead of the Lok Sabha poll which will be held in April next month.

Along with Deora and Nirupam, Congress spokesperson Randeep Surjewala was also present during Urmila’s entry into the Congress at party’s headquarter in New Delhi. While talking to the media, the actress said that this is her step towards “active politics” as she comes from a family which believed in social awareness and strong political ideals.

I'm happy that Rahul Gandhi and all the party members have given me a warm welcome, and I thank everyone for encouraging me to be here.

I belong to an academically oriented family, but I chose to be an actress. I belong to a family where my thinking and approach has been inspired by Mahatma Gandhi, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, and many popular national leaders. However, I have always had an understanding and love towards my society and country. Our leaders gave us freedom, but also gifted us the democracy and constitution. As an artist, I understand that we have got the freedom to choose and live life on our terms. I want to relate to the voice of the people and do everything possible in my capacity for the betterment of the people and country.

I don't want to be a part of politics and be assumed that I have joined for the so-called 'glamour.' I request people to not think of my participation in the same manner. I'm here to stay, to do good for the people, for the country and I believe in the ideology of the party I have joined. In life, I have never done anything half-heartedly and with this role, I will continue to do my best, Urmila Matondkar said.

The actress (45) further added that she is not being a part of politics because of glamour but to do good for the people and the country.
