After Supreme Court of India decided not to appoint a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe the arrest of five activists in connection with the Bhima-Koregaon Violence case, Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Thursday justified the arrests saying that there was no political conspiracy behind the arrest of the activists.

Hailing SC’s decision, CM Fadnavis said the apex court has taken this decision keeping in mind the evidence provided by Pune Police in this matter.

Supreme Court has vindicated our stand against Urban Maoists and has accepted that the arrests made were not to suppress the voices of dissent,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said.

Speaking on the arrests of these five activists, CM Fadnavis said that Bhima Koregaon Violence was one of the many incidents where the “urban Naxals” were planning to conspire against the country including Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s assassination.

Pune police has many evidence against the five activists arrested and we will present them in court. They conspired to create a civil war by dividing caste,” CM further added.

The five arrested accused including human right activists and lawyers – Varavara Rao, Arun Ferreira, Vernon Gonsalves, Sudha Bharadwaj, Gautam Navlakha – have been under house arrest since August 29 for allegedly inciting violence in Bhima Koregaon and their links with the banned group Communist Party of India (Maoist).
