Amid the recent controversy over Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s remarks on Savarkar, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national spokesperson Shahnawaz Hussain took a dig at Shiv Sena saying that they should choose between “power” and the Hindutva ideology.

While addressing a press conference at BJP office in Dadar, Hussain criticised the Shiv Sena for not defending “freedom fighter Veer Savarkar”.

Merely tweeting a protest against Gandhi’s insult to Savarkar will not do. Uddhav Thackeray must take a stand on whether he wants to share power with the Congress, which has insulted the national icon and freedom fighter,” he said.

Recently, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi refused to apologise over his “Rape in India” remark saying that “he is Rahul Gandhi and not Rahul Savarkar.”

This agitated the BJP leaders in centre and Maharashtra as well. At the winter session of Maharashtra Legislature in Nagpur, BJP leaders wore caps which read: “I am also Savarkar”, to protest against Gandhi’s remarks.

Reacting to Gandhi’s remarks on Savarkar, Shiv Sena, however, said that they should respect Savarkar too and “there could be no compromise on the reverence for Savarkar.”

Despite Sena’s attempt, BJP attacked its former ally saying that Shiv Sena was in love with Savarkar till some time ago, but it is going soft due to its greed for power.

Mumbai BJP also organised a protest march from Borivali to Shivaji Park in Dadar on Sunday to oppose Gandhi’s remarks.
