Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has directed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to recruit 2,700 Safai Karmacharis within three months. Earlier, the workers were protesting against the civic body for denying appointment for permanent posts.

Despite Supreme Court’s decision in 2017 to provide the sanitation workers with permanent posts in the solid waste management department, the BMC terminated the same and cited the reason that their names were misspelt in the identity proof documents.

However, this decision comes after the Kachara Vahatuk Shramik Sangh (KVSS) met the CM pressing their demands for the workers who were terminated.

According to the Supreme Court order, the workers shall be accommodated in the service. The 14,000 workers who were denied the permanent post due to the misspelling of their names shall submit a bond to BMC and they shall be recruited on a priority basis,” Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis during his meet with the representatives of KVSS.
