The Chief Minister of Maharashtra, Uddhav Thackeray has announced that the Chipi Airport at Sindhudurg will be ready by May 1, 2020. Thackeray gave out the information during a discussion at the Legislative Assembly. Notable among the topics were the development of Maharashtra’s Konkan region.

Thackeray added that the authorities have been sent to conduct trials so that the airport at Chipi can be operational by the mentioned timeframe. May 1, 2020, will be a historic day for the state of Maharashtra as it also happens to be the 60th anniversary of its foundation.

While the CM didn’t mention the Nanar oil refinery project by name, he clarified that there was no need for projects that harm the ecology of the region. The locals in the region were strongly opposed to the proposed oil refinery project. This refinery was expected to cost Rs 25 lakh crore.

Answering his critics who say a move like this is anti-development, Thackeray said: “You don't become anti-development just because you oppose such a project.”

Other proposals from the government include turning Kolhapur’s Tillari Dam into a tourist attraction and also launch submarine tours around the Konkan coast. Additionally, the authorities are also planning to convert sea forts into local attractions. The CM also spoke about banning fishing with LED lights in the Konkan region.

Despite efforts by officials to curb this practice, it is said that several fishermen in the region still do this. Thackeray has advised the police as well as the coastguard to work in tandem to keep a check on this. Experts believe that the practice of catching fish using LED lights can significantly impact the ecology of the region.
