Community Transmission in Maharashtra not started yet: Rajesh Tope on coronavirus outbreak

State Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Monday said that the community transmission of the coronavirus or COVID-19 has not started while the number of positive cases of the disease has increased to 89.

As the coronavirus cases in Maharashtra increases at an alarming rate, State Public Health Minister Rajesh Tope on Monday said that the community transmission of the coronavirus or COVID-19 has not started while the number of positive cases of the disease has increased to 89. 

While talking to the media, Tope asserted that Maharashtra has not entered the community spread phase and informed that 14 new cases were tested positive for the coronavirus. 

“I want to make it clear that we have not entered the community spread phase. The total number of coronavirus or COVID-19 cases in Maharashtra has increased to 89. Of the 89 cases, 14 new cases are from Mumbai while one is from Pune. Six people who have been tested positive for the coronavirus have travel history while eight others who have been infected have contact history,” Maharashtra Health Minister Rajesh Tope informed. 

In the wake of the coronavirus outbreak across Maharashtra, the state health minister informed that he will address media digitally through his Facebook page while stating that the state government was issuing orders to disburse the crowds at various checkpoints in Mumbai. 

“The police can take action under section 144. We have also issued orders to disburse the crowds at various checkpoints,” said Tope. 

Earlier on Sunday, Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray imposed section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrCP) in all urban parts of the state. 

While talking to the media, Rajesh Tope said that social distancing is very important given the situation in Maharashtra and country. “We have started a campaign ‘#MeAaheMazaRakshak’ (I am my saviour),” Tope informed. 

Speaking on the death of a Philippine national who died this morning, Tope said that the state government was looking into the medical history of the deceased. “We are looking into his medical history to be sure of the cause of death. He was admitted to Reliance and Kasturba hospital,” said Tope. 

The state health minister further informed that all the medical colleges attached to hospitals are being made testing centres. The total number of coronavirus cases in India have increased to 415.
