Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar on Monday was appointed as the leader of the opposition (LoP) in Maharashtra legislative assembly. This happened after the election for Deputy Chairman post in state legislative council was announced.

The appointment of Congress leader Wadettiwar as the new LoP comes seven days after the commencement of Maharashtra legislature monsoon session.

The situation to appoint the new LoP occurred after former Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil resigned from his legislative post and joined Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the Maharashtra Assembly session.

Later, Patil was inducted in the Maharashtra cabinet by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and was granted housing portfolio. This happened during the state cabinet expansion.

Wadettiwar is the first Congress MLA from Vidarbha region of Maharashtra to be elected as the LoP. The Congress leader is a former state Water Resource minister.

Earlier, CM Fadnavis had made the appoint of LoP in state assembly ‘conditional’. It was informed that Wadettiwar’s appointment will be considered if the election for the deputy chairman post in Maharashtra legislative council is announced.
