Sanjay Nirupam wanted to contest from North West constituency in Mumbai. But this constituency was left to the Shiv Sena Thackeray group in the seat allocation of the Maha Vikas Aghadi. Annoyed by this, Nirupam started publicly criticising the Congress. Interestingly, he was included in the list of star campaigners of the state Congress by the party. But because he started criticising the party itself, he was expelled from the Congress. After that he said that he was resigning from the party and severely criticised the leadership and ideology of the party.
