Finally, BMC has green signalled the appointment of the opposition leader in the civic body. The matter was discussed on Monday in the general body meeting held in BMC presided by Mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar. Shiv Sena emerged victorious on 84 seats whereas counterpart Bharatiya Janta Party won 82 seats. Congress stood third with 31 seats.

For the very first time in the history of BMC, such an instant has occurred wherein BJP has decided not to accept any posts. Now the confusion is clear and the leader of the opposition will be appointed by Congress.

Citing the provisions of 37 (A) of Mumbai Municipal Corporation Act, the matter of appointing the leader of opposition came under the jurisdiction of the mayor.

Mayor did ask Manoj Kotak, BJP group leader during the general body meeting, whether the BJP wanted to take up the post of the opposition leader? Kotak said it uprightly that party doesn’t want any post. The mayor has decided to write to BJP before announcing the leader of the opposition from Congress party to avoid any legal issues.
