On the occasion of Maharashtra Diwas, Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray on Friday addressed the citizens via social media and informed that the restrictions will be lifted slowly while stating that the people will have to follow the rules to stop the spread of the coronavirus or COVID-19.

“The formation of the state of Maharashtra has completed 60 years. May 1st is usually the time for celebrations but this year it couldn’t happen. This time will also go away,” Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray said during his address on Friday.

Thackeray said lockdown has acted like a ‘speed breaker’ for COVID-19 in relation to the number of cases. “Some will say that what was the point of the lockdown if the cases are still increasing. But I see the imposition of lockdown as a speed breaker in terms of cases,” the Chief Minister said while referring to the term “circuit-breaker” used by Singaporean Prime Minister.

Thackeray further reiterated that Maharashtra has 80 per cent patients of coronavirus or COVID-19 who are asymptomatic while stating that the growing cases are from containment zones which have been identified by the state government.

“The government has also quarantined some people from these places marked as containment zones. The growing cases are in those places. However, of the total cases, 80 per cent of patients are asymptomatic in the state,” the Chief Minister said.

Speaking on the lockdown extension, Uddhav Thackeray said that it was important to lift lockdown in districts in accordance with the division in categories of red zones, orange zones and green zones.

“People are asking what will happen after May 3. There are a lot of questions on the economy and job loss,” Uddhav Thackeray said while adding that the government was slowly lifting restrictions but the same will be imposed against if there is crowding.

The Red zone areas include Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Kalyan, Dombivli, Nagpur where the cases are increasing. The orange zone is witnessing fewer cases in some areas and the rest are witnessing none. The Maharashtra government earlier had allowed the industries to operate in green zone districts with zero COVID-19 cases.
