Leader of Opposition (LoP) in Maharastra legislative assembly, Devendra Fadnavis on Sunday demanded the Shiv Sena-led Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) government to increase the number of tests by four times in Mumbai.

Fadnavis said that the tests being conducted for the coronavirus in Mumbai should be increased by four times in order to effectively contain the spread of COVID-19. He said that the government’s decision to limit tests to 5,500 in Mumbai was the reason for the spread of the coronavirus in Mumbai.

“The fewer tests and the government restricting tests to 5,000 to 5,500 is responsible for the rising coronavirus cases in Mumbai," Fadnavis claimed.

The former Maharashtra Chief Minister also expressed concerns over the increasing number of coronavirus cases in Maharashtra saying that it accounts for 45 per cent of the total fatalities being reported in the country.

“The number of deaths in Maharashtra have crossed 10,000. This is a very serious condition. The number of fatalities in the state accounts for 45 per cent of the total deaths in the country,” Fadnavis said.

He also alleged that at least 600 COVID-19 patients who died at home have been recorded in Mumbai. Moreover, 287 deaths of COVID-19 patients have been labelled as ‘deaths caused by other reasons’.

“This is in violation of the guidelines laid down by the Indian Medical Research Centre (ICMR). Deaths due to accidents or suicide of COVID-19 patients can be categorised as ‘death caused by other reasons,” he said.

Earlier, Fadnavis had slammed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) over the number of daily tests being less. He said that it will difficult to win the war against coronavirus without increase testing limit.
