Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Monday announced that it will contest the upcoming municipal elections in Maharashtra. The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP is gearing up to contest the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections which are scheduled to be held in 2022.

Along with the BMC, AAP plans to contest local body polls which will be held in 2022 in Thane, Kolhapur, Pune and Nagpur with an aim to bring the “Delhi model of development and good governance".

While talking to the party volunteers in Maharastra via video conference, AAP National Executive member Durgesh Pathak urged the party members to be prepared to contest every major upcoming local body elections. He added that the special focus will remain on the BMC which is largely dominated by the Shiv Sena and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

"These difficult times of the pandemic have exposed all established political parties and their hollow claims of governance. However, even our political detractors, no less than PM Modi has admitted that the Delhi Model should be emulated across the country to fight COVID-19,” Pathak asserted.

The AAP in Maharashtra is relying on the state committee leadership including Dhananjay Shinde and Preeti Sharma Menon to contest the upcoming municipal elections in the state. The party will start its preparations for local body polls in Navi Mumbai, Aurangabad, Kalyan-Dombivali and Vasai-Virar.

“We will also contest Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Kolhapur and Nagpur Polls in 2022. Special focus will be on Mumbai's BMC-India's largest and richest Municipal Corporation, which still has poor standards of governance, public service delivery and wholesale corruption.” Pathak said.

AAP had contested the Lok Sabha as well as assembly elections in Maharashtra last year but was unable to grab any seat. AAP National spokesperson Preeti Sharma Menon had earlier informed that the party will contest the civic elections including the upcoming 2022 BMC polls.
