After Delhi's win, AAP to contest local bodies election in Maharashtra

AAP contested the Maharashtra assembly elections in 2019 but failed to win on a single seat. The Kejriwal-led party contested the polls campaigning on their Delhi model of governance. However, the public mandate didn’t favour AAP.

After sweeping the Delhi assembly elections, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) it is all set to contest the upcoming local bodies elections in Maharashtra. 

In a statement, Maharashtra AAP stated that the “resounding victory” of their party in Delhi polls has made it clear that the people of the national capital have rejected the “divisive and communal” politics of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

AAP National spokesperson Preeti Sharma Menon informed that the party will contest the civic elections in Maharashtra including the upcoming 2022 Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) polls.

“In Maharashtra, we will contest the local body elections and will set up an organisation here. The party will field candidates in the Zila Parishad, Municipal Corporation elections,” AAP leader Preeti Sharma Menon said in the statement. 

Menon further said that she wants the Maharashtra government to replicate the Delhi model of governance.

On Wednesday, Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP won the Delhi assembly elections with 62 seats while BJP managed to win eight seats only. AAP also contested the Maharashtra assembly elections in 2019 but failed to win on a single seat. 

AAP in Maharashtra contested the polls campaigning on their Delhi model of governance. However, the public mandate didn’t favour the Kejriwal-led party. 

As AAP celebrated its win in the Delhi polls, party MLA Naresh Yadav’s convoy was attacked on Wednesday night leading to the death of party workers while another got injured. 

Reacting to this, Maharashtra Minister Nawab Malik alleged political involvement in the attack on AAP MLA and its workers stating that it is the responsibility of the Home Ministry to arrest the culprits as soon as possible.

Delhi Police arrested a man in this connection and ruled out the possibility of a political motive behind the shooting incident. The police are further investigating the matter.
