According to reports, Maharashtra Chief Minister, Eknath Shinde on Friday, July 29, mentioned that Dahi Handi a popular festival in the state will be proclaimed as a public holiday across the state.

Shinde was quoted in accounts elaborating on how till now, collectors in certain districts in Maharashtra had been proclaiming a public holiday notice for Dahi Handi in their district. But now he will talk to the chief secretary and ask him to issue a notice for the entire state.

Based on narratives, the festival is already observed as a public holiday in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. He reportedly declared that Dahi Handi celebrations are extremely popular in Maharashtra and with COVID-19 curbs coming to an end, the festival will be celebrated in a big way this year.

Accounts claim that MLA Pratap Sarnaik had met Shinde and during the meeting, he handed over a letter demanding that a public holiday be declared on the day of Dahi Handi. The said demand is believed to have been accepted by Shinde, who declared a public holiday in Maharashtra.

Recently, Shinde announced that all COVID-19-related restrictions have been withdrawn for the celebrations this year. However, it is necessary to follow all the rules of the Supreme Court and Bombay High Court (HC).
