The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) recently made it compulsory for citizens to immerse their Ganesha idols made of Plaster of Paris (PoP) brought at home in artificial lakes

This is being undertaken to propel Mumbaikars to curtail pollution. In order to achieve this, the BMC is considering increasing the number of artificial lakes to 100. This, they say will avoid any inconveniences, reports stated.

According to accounts, assistant commissioners of all the 24 wards in Mumbai have been told to undertake a review. Moreover, they have been instructed to make arrangements for three to four artificial lakes in each ward.

Earlier, the BMC had banned PoP idols this year but later retracted that notice. The civic body then declared a full ban on PoP idols in Mumbai during the Ganpati festivities in 2023. Moreover, this year, they have made it mandatory for devotees to write "PoP" on those idols. This will enable its seamless identification during immersion.

In addition to this, the BMC has also urged that domestic idols should not be over two feet and that the height of public pandal idols is as low as possible. Further, to erect Ganesh pandals in the city, online permission will be accorded by means of a single-window system.

Narratives suggest that nearly two lakh domestic Ganpati idols are worshipped in the city every year. Thus, with the civic authority's concept of artificial lakes garnering a positive response over the past few years, the body is looking to increase its number this year.
