After denying permission to Bharip Bahujan Mahasangh (BBM) president Dr Prakash Ambedkar to hold a ‘elgaar rally’ from Byculla to Azad Maidan - in connection with Bhima Koregaon violence- the protestors reached Azad Maidan to continue with their protest.

Ambedkar-led protestors are demanding the arrest of right-wing leader Sambhaji Bhide for his alleged involvement in the violence.

A few days ago, Ambedkar had announced that he would carry out the protest rally from Byculla to Vidhan Bhavan on Monday, March 26, 2018, if Bhide is not arrested. But the police denied him permission for the protest owing to Maharashtra board examinations and asked the protestors to continue with their protest at Azad Maidan.

This did not go well with Ambedkar who expressed angst on being denied permission and alleged that the state is trying to strangulate the democracy.

SSC exams are going on and the protest can create law and order situation, hence we denied the permission,” Deepak Devraj, DCP PRO, Mumbai Police.
