Former President Pranab Mukherjee dies at 84

Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India, died on Monday in Delhi. The 84-year-old was admitted to the Army Hospital on August 10 for surgery. After the surgery for a blood clot in his brain, Mukherjee developed a lung infection. 

On Sunday night, the Army’s Research and Referral Hospital informed that Mukherjee’s health has been deteriorating. He went in “septic shock” due to the lung infection and was put on ventilator support. 

On August 10, Mukherjee was also tested positive for the coronavirus. The former President has been on the ventilator since his surgery. He has served as the 13th President of India from 2012 to 2017. 

Mukherjee, son of freedom fighter KK Mukherjee, was involved in active politics since 1935. He played a major role as the Congress leader and was the backbone of UPA-led governments on several occasions. 

Mukherjee is survived by his three children including Sharmistha, Indrajit and Abhijit. His son, Abhijit Mukherjee, took to Twitter to inform that Pranab Mukherjee passed away. 

“With a Heavy Heart , this is to inform you that my father Shri #PranabMukherjee has just passed away inspite of the best efforts of Doctors of RR Hospital & prayers, duas & prarthanas from people throughout India! I thank all of You (sic),” Abhijit tweeted. 

The former President was conferred Bharat Ratna in 2019 and was also awarded Padma Vibhushan in 2008.
